Golfkikare med laser och slope

A laser takes the guesswork out. You aim at the flag, press the button and know exactly how far it is. But slope, competition rules and a few details decide whether you buy the right one – or end up with an expensive rangefinder you're not allowed to use.

What slope actually does

Slope adjusts the distance for the elevation change between you and the flag. An uphill shot plays longer than it measures, a downhill one shorter – the slope function gives you the "plays-like" distance instead of the straight-line one. On a hilly course, that's the difference between the right club and a ball that comes up ten meters short.

Slope in competition – allowed or not?

Slope isn't allowed in most competitions. The rangefinder itself is usually fine, but the function that accounts for elevation has to be switched off – otherwise you're breaking the rules. That's why good rangefinders have a mode where slope is easy to turn off, often with a clear indicator on the outside so officials can see it. Always check the competition's local rules before you tee off.

What to look for

The most important thing is a quick, clear reading – a rangefinder that hesitates costs you time on the tee. Look for these:

  • Range – 400–600 meters is plenty for every hole.
  • Magnification – 6x is standard and makes the flag easy to find.
  • Flag lock – locks onto the flag even with trees behind it.
  • Slope you can switch off – for competition play.
  • Charging – with USB you skip the hunt for batteries.

See laser rangefinders with slope and compare them with how and where you play.

Laser or GPS?

A laser gives the exact distance to the flag, GPS gives distances to the green and hazards without you having to aim. Laser is precise, GPS is quick and handy on unfamiliar courses. Plenty of serious players carry a laser – precision to the flag is hard to beat.

FAQ

Is slope allowed in competition?

No, in most competitions the slope function has to be switched off. The rangefinder itself is usually allowed. Always check the local rules before you tee off.

What does slope mean on a golf rangefinder?

Slope adjusts the distance for the elevation change to the flag and gives you the plays-like distance – longer uphill, shorter downhill.

How far does a golf rangefinder reach?

Most measure 400–600 meters, which is plenty on every hole. The range to the flag itself is shorter but more than enough.

Laser or GPS – which is better?

A laser gives the exact distance to the flag, GPS gives a quick overview of the green and hazards. Laser wins on precision, GPS on simplicity on unfamiliar courses.

A rangefinder won't make you a better player. But it takes the doubt out of club selection – and doubt costs more shots than you think.
