In short
  • ✓Wear the glove on your lead hand — the left if you're right-handed.
  • ✓It should fit snugly with no wrinkles. If in doubt, size down.
  • ✓Cabretta leather gives the best grip and feel.

Which hand does the glove go on?

Your lead hand — the one at the top of the grip. Right-handed players wear the glove on the left hand, left-handed players on the right. That's the hand that controls the club and takes the most friction through the swing.

Some players wear two gloves, especially in rain or cold. It gives a more even grip but less feel. Try it on the range before you decide.

Find the right size

A glove should fit like a second skin. No wrinkles in the palm, no air at the fingertips. Measure around the palm just below the knuckles, not including the thumb.

Size Palm Usually fits
S 17–18 cm Slim hands
M 18–19.5 cm Most women
M/L 19.5–21 cm Medium hands
L 21–22.5 cm Most men
XL 22.5–24 cm Wide hands

If you're between two sizes — go with the smaller one. Leather gives a little after a few rounds.

Cabretta leather or synthetic?

Cabretta is a thin, dense sheepskin with natural grip. That's why tour players use it. You get a better feel for the clubhead and a glove that shapes itself to your hand.

Synthetic handles rain better and costs less, but gives less feel and wears faster where the grip works hardest. For most golfers, leather is the obvious choice.

"A glove should feel like nothing. That's when it's doing its job."

Make your glove last

  1. 1
    Take it off between shots
Sweat is leather's worst enemy. Take the glove off between shots and clip it to your bag.
  2. 2
    Let it dry flat
After the round: pull the fingers straight and let it dry at room temperature. Never on the radiator.
  3. 3
    Rotate two gloves
Two gloves that take turns resting every other round last longer than one that's used all the time.

FAQ

How often should I replace my glove?

When the grip turns shiny or the leather cracks in the palm. For most people who play every week, that's a couple of times a season.

Can I wash a leather glove?

No, not in the machine. Wipe it with a slightly damp cloth and let it air-dry at room temperature.

What do I do if my glove gets wet?

Pull it flat, let it dry slowly away from any heat source, and put it back on before it's completely dry so it keeps its shape.
